| Since 1961, Barena has been plumbing the rich, idiosyncratic sartorial traditions of Venice to create menswear that is both striking and unique. The name Barena is taken from the Venetian "baro," signifying the space between land and water in the Venetian lagoon. The liminal lifestyle practiced by residents of the area called for a responsive mode of dress that is reflected in Barena's designs, many of which blend nautical influences with silhouettes and fabrics more typical of Italian menswear. Trousers tend to be cropped, sweaters knit thick and chunky, garments accessorized with rope toggles and wood buttons. When it comes to materials, Barena pulls no punches, using only the highest quality natural textiles, even reproducing vintage wools from inactive Venetian mills. |
